Apple blocks the repairs of the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR battery by third-party repairers. If tampered with, You get a service message that is permanent.

iFixit reports that changing the battery of an iPhone XR, XS or XS Max would bring up a service message – “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery” followed by the phone’s inability to display battery health readings.

This is made possible thanks to the new chip on 2018 iPhones: The chip has the feature of communicating the phone’s battery cycle, and temperature to the phone and apparently has an authentication feature that enables it to synchronise with a particular phone.

Apparently the service message makes alot of users think they could just easily go get a genuine battery but it doesn’t stop the service message and lack of features. The issue only goes away if the phone is repaired in an authorised Apple center or store.

Seen by many as a move to lock more users in the Apple Ecosystem, Apple stated that it is a move to rather enhance better repairs and recycling in the right to repair movement


Hopefully it is a good move on Apple’s pocket but time would tell how the users sees it.
